Altum Orinoco refers to Pterophyllum altum, the true altum angelfish, one of the most iconic and demanding species in aquaristics.
What it is
- Scientific name: Pterophyllum altum
- Origin: Orinoco river basin (Venezuela and Colombia), including tributaries with clear and blackwater, low mineralization.
- Differentiation: Not a “common large angelfish”. The true altum has a taller body, a distinct concave head profile, and very long fins.
Key characteristics
- Total height (with fins): can exceed 35–40 cm
- Behavior: peaceful, but sensitive to stress
- Life expectancy: 8–10 years (or more, in ideal conditions)
Recommended aquarium
- Minimum height: 50 cm (60–70 cm is ideal for adults)
- Volume: from 400–500 L for a small group

- Vertical driftwood (roots)
- Low direct light
- Plants resistant to warm and acidic water (or dried leaves)
- Filtration: powerful but with gentle flow
Feeding
- Prefer high-quality foods:
- Brine shrimp, krill, larvae (frozen or live)
- Premium pellets specific for cichlids
- Juveniles require frequent feeding and pristine water to grow well.
Many fish sold as “altum” are actually:
- Pterophyllum scalare “altum‑like”
- Pterophyllum leopoldi
