Origin: Direct descendant of Casal Selvagem (F0)

Altum Orinoco refers to Pterophyllum altum, the true altum angelfish, one of the most iconic and demanding species in aquaristics.

What it is

  • Scientific name: Pterophyllum altum
  • Origin: Orinoco river basin (Venezuela and Colombia), including tributaries with clear and blackwater, low mineralization.
  • Differentiation: Not a “common large angelfish”. The true altum has a taller body, a distinct concave head profile, and very long fins.

Key characteristics

  • Total height (with fins): can exceed 35–40 cm
  • Behavior: peaceful, but sensitive to stress
  • Life expectancy: 8–10 years (or more, in ideal conditions)

Recommended aquarium

  • Minimum height: 50 cm (60–70 cm is ideal for adults)
  • Volume: from 400–500 L for a small group
  • Layout:
    • Vertical driftwood (roots)
    • Low direct light
    • Plants resistant to warm and acidic water (or dried leaves)
  • Filtration: powerful but with gentle flow

Feeding

  • Prefer high-quality foods:
    • Brine shrimp, krill, larvae (frozen or live)
    • Premium pellets specific for cichlids
  • Juveniles require frequent feeding and pristine water to grow well.

Many fish sold as “altum” are actually:

  • Pterophyllum scalare “altum‑like”
  • Pterophyllum leopoldi
